Diwali at Home: Where Light, Love and Family Come Together

Diwali is a celebration of light, family and togetherness. It’s a time to pause, give thanks, come together in prayer and celebrate the people who make life special. From sharing traditional Indian sweets to welcoming loved ones into the home, the festival brings a renewed sense of light, joy and connection.
For many families, Diwali is one of the most meaningful times of the year, bringing generations together to honour traditions, reflect on the year that has passed and look forward to what lies ahead. It’s about making time for one another and creating moments that are cherished long after the celebrations have finished.
For Sherridon Homes Sales Consultant Banaj Bhatia, Diwali is a time to celebrate the people closest to him.
“Celebrating with your loved ones and thanking everyone in the family for being there for each other is what Diwali means to me and my family,” Banaj explains. “It’s wonderful to hear our customers share their traditions and what this time of year means to them.”
Bringing Diwali Traditions into the Home
Across many households, Diwali is celebrated through traditions that bring family and friends together. Prayer and time spent giving thanks are central to the occasion, while homes are filled with light, colour and festive decorations.
Lighting diyas, candles and decorative lights symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and brings a warm, welcoming feel to the home. Often placed around entrances, windows and living spaces, these lights create a beautiful atmosphere as families gather to celebrate.
Rangoli is another much-loved tradition, with colourful patterns created using coloured powders, flowers or rice, often at the entrance of the home to welcome guests and bring good fortune. Each design is unique, adding a personal touch to the celebrations and creating a vibrant first impression for those arriving.
From decorating the home together to preparing spaces for prayer and hosting loved ones, these traditions make the home an important part of the Diwali experience. Every detail helps create a festive atmosphere, filling the home with warmth, colour and a sense of occasion.

A Celebration of Sweet Treats and Family
For Banaj, some of the most memorable Diwali traditions happen around the table.
“I love praying, eating sweets and making homemade desserts with my family. It’s a special part of celebrating Diwali together,” he says.
Traditional sweets play an important role in the festivities, often prepared at home or shared with family, friends and neighbours. From ladoo and barfi to gulab jamun and jalebi, these much-loved treats are a way of sharing happiness and bringing people together.
Many families have their own recipes passed down through generations, making the preparation of sweets just as special as enjoying them. The kitchen becomes a place to gather, lend a hand and share stories, while plates of homemade treats are exchanged as a gesture of goodwill and celebration.
Whether it’s preparing favourite family recipes, exchanging sweets or enjoying a meal together, these moments create lasting memories and keep traditions alive across generations.

Making Space for What Matters Most
A home is more than the place where we live. It’s where traditions are shared, families come together and memories are made. During Diwali, these moments take on an even greater meaning as homes become filled with light, laughter, prayer and the people we love.
From the glow of diyas and candles to the colours of rangoli and the sharing of homemade sweets, every tradition reflects the importance of connection and belonging. It’s a reminder that the moments that make a house feel like home are often the ones shared with the people around us.
At Sherridon Homes, we know that home means something different to every family. We also recognise that Diwali is an important celebration for many of our customers, representing traditions, beliefs and family connections that deserve to be celebrated.
Diwali is a time we love to acknowledge and celebrate with our customers, taking the opportunity to recognise the traditions that are important to them and the many ways families come together to make their house a home.
